The Better Government Association is seeking a versatile copy editor who make sure our work is clear, error-free and well written. The editor will ensure that content meets the Better Government Association’s standards. This position will work with content from our newsroom, policy and development team. The ideal candidate can deftly collaborate with editors on complex investigative pieces, proofread newsletters and social media posts, as well as review grant proposals and policy statements.
A 2022 Pulitzer Prize winner, the Better Government Association’s mission is to achieve transparency, equity and accountability in government — for everyone. For almost 100 years, the BGA has vigorously pursued its mission by producing investigative journalism, advocating for good-government reform, litigating to defend public access to information, and mobilizing the public to achieve change.
A member of the audience engagement team, the Copy Editor reports to the Manager of Audience Engagement.
Responsibilities

Proofread text and correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors

Verify factual correctness of information, such as dates and statistics

Check text for style, readability, and adherence to editorial policies

Rewrite text to improve clarity and readability
Requirements

Minimum two year copy editing experience, preferably in a news organization.

Proficiency creating social media content is a plus

Able to edit on tight deadlines, work with reporters and editors across a wide range of topics

Proficiency with applying the principles of style guides, such as the AP Style, to different types of writing

Experience working with Google Docs and publishing tools, including a CMS like WordPress

Ability to remain detailed-oriented and focused when processing large amounts of text

A positive and friendly manner, with a strong service orientation, high degree of flexibility, and the ability to work under pressure
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $45,000 – $50,000. The position also includes medical, dental, and vision insurance; a comprehensive paid time off package; commuter transit benefits; and a 401(k).
