ABC 7 Chicago Weekend Watch

July 1, 2021 @ 8:30 am

Tune in to ABC-7 Saturday morning after 8:30 a.m. to catch the latest Weekend Watch segment where we focus a spotlight on government. Investigative Reporter Sidnee King will discuss our latest investigation on carjacking incidents in Chicago last year.

Last year, there were more than 1400 carjacking incidents in Chicago. Only 13% of those cases resulted in arrests. Of that 13%, the BGA found at least 66 cases involving kids as young as 13 involved in the crime. Almost all of the Chicago teens arrested for carjacking last year are Black and from underserved neighborhoods on the city’s South and West sides. Attempts to provide services to these young people who are in the system for carjacking have been made by some individual judges and youth advocates. But as the BGA found, there are little to no formal services for young people who face more serious charges. Equity reporter Sidnee King will appear on Weekend Watch to talk on the need for more programming to engage young people involved in carjackings; programs that currently exist; the challenges with some of the programs meant to be a resource to young people & more solutions in the works/efforts from judges etc… to offer support to young people involved in these types of crimes.
