One year after the release of the explosive Laquan McDonald video, the BGA hosts an important discussion about the state of police reform in Chicago. What progress has been made? What problems remain?
Even if the Illinois General Assembly and the Governor reach a budget deal by May 31, there will still be a ripple effect of the year-long budget impasse and a tough road to fiscal viability. Our next BGA event in Springfield on June 20 will include a panel discussion offering firsthand accounts of the impact on health care, education, business, social services and the Springfield community in general. The event will air live on WMAY 970-AM and 94.7-FM.
Illinois turns 200 years old this December, and to honor the occasion, the Better Government Association and The State Journal-Register are asking experts on three crucial topics — Transportation, Technology and Gender Equity — to help us whiteboard the future: What needs to be done to make Illinois a leader?
At the 2019 Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Awards for Investigative Reporting, the BGA will honor the best reporting in our state and host a conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh, known for his exposé of the massacre in My Lai, Vietnam as well as exposing atrocities at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.
