SUMMARY:ABC 7 Chicago Weekend Watch
DESCRIPTION:Tune in to ABC-7 Saturday morning after 8:30 a.m. to catch the latest Weekend Watch segment where we focus a spotlight on government. Investigative Reporter Sidnee King will discuss our latest investigation on carjacking incidents in Chicago last year. \nLast year\, there were more than 1400 carjacking incidents in Chicago. Only 13% of those cases resulted in arrests. Of that 13%\, the BGA found at least 66 cases involving kids as young as 13 involved in the crime. Almost all of the Chicago teens arrested for carjacking last year are Black and from underserved neighborhoods on the city’s South and West sides. Attempts to provide services to these young people who are in the system for carjacking have been made by some individual judges and youth advocates. But as the BGA found\, there are little to no formal services for young people who face more serious charges. Equity reporter Sidnee King will appear on Weekend Watch to talk on the need for more programming to engage young people involved in carjackings; programs that currently exist; the challenges with some of the programs meant to be a resource to young people & more solutions in the works/efforts from judges etc… to offer support to young people involved in these types of crimes.

SUMMARY:ABC 7 Chicago Weekend Watch
DESCRIPTION:Tune in to ABC-7 Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. to catch the latest Weekend Watch segment where we focus a spotlight on government. Investigative Reporter Madison Hopkins will discuss our follow-up from our April investigation we published with the Chicago Tribune that found Chicago city officials allowed dangerous conditions to go unfixed at dozens of buildings that later became the sites of fatal fires. \nInvestigative Reporters Madison Hopkins and Cecilia decided to look at what other cities have done to make their residents safer from fires and found nine things that could serve as potential solutions to many of Chicago’s problems.Talking points:\nMany of the strategies are pretty basic according to housing code experts we interviewed. For example\, half of the top 20 largest cities in the country require landlords to register or receive a license from the government. This gives city officials access to fundamental information like how many rental units are in a city and who owns them\, which allows them to make better decisions. Chicago used to require something like this but threw out the rule in 2017. \n\nOther steps cities have taken to strengthen their building code enforcement include: starting tenant advocate offices within the city government; offering tenants the ability to sue their landlords for repairs in a special speedy court; and inspecting all rental buildings on a routine basis rather than waiting for complaints to trigger inspections like we do in Chicago. \n\nNext steps: In response to our initial investigation\, Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s administration accepted no blame\, pointing out that most of the fires occurred under her predecessor. She also said her administration is working on reviving a long-abandoned list of chronically deficient landlords to be released to the public\, but we haven’t heard many more details on that yet. Meanwhile\, Ald. Villegas introduced a resolution last month calling for hearings on how the DOB responds to tenant complaints\, citing our investigation. We’re keeping an eye on that and any other moves for reforms.

SUMMARY:Understanding Cook County’s Pattern of Dead-End Drug Arrests
DESCRIPTION:In Cook County\, thousands of people are arrested every year for possessing small amounts of drugs only to have their cases thrown out just days later. It’s due to an unwritten rule in the courts that costs millions of dollars in taxes and costs those getting arrested their jobs\, their homes and their freedom. \nA new investigation\, “Dead-End Drug Arrests\,” examines this pattern in Cook County. The Better Government Association and the Chicago Sun-Times found those charged with carrying less than one gram of drugs are still routinely arrested although their charges are overwhelmingly dismissed in the earliest stages of their court cases. \nJoin us online on Wednesday\, December 8 at 6:30 p.m. for our discussion with: \n\nKathie Kane-Willis\, director of research\, Chicago Urban League\nBenny Lee\, founder and CEO\, National Alliance for the Empowerment of the Formerly Incarcerated\nEra Laudermilk\, Chief of Staff for Cook County Public Defender’s office\nBen Ruddell\, Director of Criminal Justice Policy\, ACLU Illinois\n\nBetter Government Association investigative reporter Casey Toner will moderate the conversation with guests as they discuss the findings of the investigation\, the history behind existing drug laws\, the Cook County court system’s record on drug charges and the impact the Cook County criminal system has on communities. They’ll also examine what real reform could look like in Illinois. \n“Dead-End Drug Arrests” is part of The Circuit\, a joint project from Better Government Association and Injustice Watch\, in partnership with the civic tech consulting firm DataMade. Learn more about the project here. The University of Southern California’s Annenberg Center for Health Journalism also provided financial support for the “Dead-End Drug Arrests” project through a 2021 National Fellowship. \nReaders are welcome to participate in the digital discussion by submitting questions for our panel when you RSVP. \nYou will not need to be logged into Facebook/YouTube or have a Facebook/YouTube account to view the live stream.

DESCRIPTION:Tune in to ABC-7 Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. to catch the latest Weekend Watch segment where we focus a spotlight on government. BGA President and CEO David Greising wrote a column breaking down the Mayor’s strategy that includes solutions like increasing the involvement of the feds\, suspending custody alternatives for people who have been charged with violent crimes (i.e. electronic monitoring). Cook County Public Defender Sharone Mitchell and many law advocates have opposed Lightfoot’s plans — Mitchell even calling it “unconstitutional.” The Mayor expects to put a strategy in place by summer 2022.

SUMMARY:Investigating the Future of Quantum in South Chicago
DESCRIPTION:What if a new generation of computers\, faster and smarter than the ones we have now\, can power the local economy in South Chicago? That’s the $500 million bet that Gov. J.B. Pritzker is putting on the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park\, one of the biggest and most ambitious tech hubs planned for an industry that’s still mostly in its research and development phase. The South Chicago community has been waiting for decades for something to replace the Steel Mill that once employed tens of thousands of people and has been abandoned since 1992. Developers have come and gone\, going as far as purchasing the land\, but plans to convert the property into businesses and housing never materialized. \n\n\n\nThe Illinois Answers Project\, The Chicago Council on Science and Technology and Block Club Chicago presents an evening of conversations about inclusive economic growth\, the promise of quantum computing and community hopes and worries about these major changes. We will be talking to experts to find out more about some of the key questions surrounding the development. What do quantum computers do today and what is the hope for this technology in the future? What does inclusive economic growth and development look like? What will be the impact of construction and operations on the environment?  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nDate and Time: October 9th\, 6 pm \n\n\n\nLocation: South Shore Branch\, Chicago Public Library\, 2505 E 73rd St\, Chicago\, IL 60649 \n\n\n\nSchedule:5:30 pm – Doors Open6:00 – 7:00 pm – Expert Conversations and Q&A \n\n\n\nWe are dedicated to providing an inclusive environment for everyone. DESCRIPTION:Join us for Beyond the Byline: Featuring the 22nd Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Awards for Investigative Reporting on Thursday\, May 7\, from 3:30–8:30 p.m. at Venue SIX10 in downtown Chicago. \n\n\n\nThe event will feature a community-centered storytelling panel elevating the sources\, experts and lived experiences that informed Illinois Answers Project investigations; an engaging conversation with Errin Haines\, editor-at-large at The 19th; the presentation of the Richard H.
