The indictment of former state Speaker Michael Madigan proves no one is above the law. Madigan’s alleged abuse of his office and his accumulation and centralization of power is just another example of why the state of Illinois needs to revisit and enhance its ethics laws that fell short of meaningful reform last session.

The BGA Policy team will continue to advocate the key elements of our policy agenda: the increased need for enhanced financial disclosures and conflicts of economic interest, closing the lobbying revolving door loopholes, creating statutory term limits on General Assembly leadership positions, and enacting meaningful fixes to the office of the legislative inspector general.

The BGA urges the General Assembly to take ethics reform seriously to end the string of corruption within the Illinois government.
