The Illinois Answers Project has been investigating the use, misuse and abuse of restraint chairs in Illinois county jails. Our reporting has found jails in the state used the devices on average more than 1,000 times a year from 2019 to 2023, often in ways that violated state rules, county policies and manufacturer guidelines.

We created a small “zine” booklet version of our investigation in an effort to make our reporting more accessible and to provide resources to people who are incarcerated.
